THE LAST MATCH AT FILBERT STREET

One month after the match against Celtic, Leicester City played for the last time at their Filbert Street ground. They had been playing there since 1891 but a new era awaited them just 400 yards away from the old ground at the brand new Walker Stadium. The last match was against Tottenham Hotspur on 11th of May 2003 and a 100 page souvenir programme commemorating the 111years of football at the Foxes' famous ground was published to celebrate the occassion.

On the night of the match against Celtic, advertising leaflets (front and back displayed below) were handed out about the special programme that would be published for City's last match at Filbert Street. By posting the leaflet back with an order for the programme, you get your name printed in a fans' Roll of Honour to be included in the programme. As you would expect, 99.9% of Celtic fans were not interested, throwing the leaflet on the ground like so many Rangers scarves after the Mo Johnston signing. However, being a total anorak, I saved one of the leaflets and thought I would add my name to the list. The idea was that you would name your best ever match attended at the old ground with your order and that would be included with your name. I filled in the form, named the friendly match between the two clubs as my favourite ever City match, ordered two copies at £5 each and posted it away.

They arrived. The programme is an excellent issue and one that every City collector will want to have but the first thing that I noticed was the small photograph of Martin O'God (when he was City's Manager) in his famous leap pose, celebrating a goal for his team. It's a great sight and one we hope to see many times in the future. Next, I looked for my name in the list. Each copy of the ordered programme, has a personalise number on the inside of the front cover corresponding to when the application was returned and your name appeared in the list in that order. There it was on page 64. I was 705 in a total of 1581 that replied.
