PIRATE MATCH PROGRAMME
VALENCIA pirate match programme.

This is a third pirate that has finally turned up after a week of rumours that it was in circulation. It comes with a claim that it was sold at the match in Valencia. This is extremely doubtful as not one of the Celtic programme collectors attending the match saw it being sold on the day. These collectors are people that search the city and the stadium for any Celtic related material to add to their collection. It is likely that it was produced closer to Celtic Park than El Camp De Mestalla.

(Since writing the text above I have been informed by a very reliable source that the pirate programme in question was NOT sold at the match.)

The programme is a poor effort and definitely the worst of the pirates so far. An A4 folded effort, it has colour on the front and back covers and is black and white on the inside two pages.

The whole programme looks like a cut and paste job, produced on a colour photocopier with very little use of computer technology (if any). This definitely applies to the inside pages which have been photocopied from a paste up master copy. The contents of the inside pages look like they have been nicked from the pages of the Celtic view. There is very little information consisting of the Celtic pool, a very short newspaper clipping about Martin O'Neill's likely approach to the game in Valencia. Another photocopied clipping give the details of the match (taken from the Celtic View) and five graphics using three different images are spread around the pages as space fillers.

The front cover has a Valencia C.F. banner image at the top of the page which is probably taken from some Valencia related publication. The match details are included in the bottom half of the page in two different fonts and font colours. The VALENCIA v CELTIC on the bottom-left is a paste-up from the Celtic v Valencia programme issued in 1962. On the right, the date, the words STADIUM ISSUE (it may not be) and NUMBER with a number written in pen completing the text elements. In the bottom middle an official UEFA badge. The large Valencia badge in the middle is almost like a transfer and has a rubber-like texture - typical of colour photocopiers. Whatever it is, it is prone to cracking and this can be seen in the copy featured here. A crack has appeared already and the programme has never been folded. Either this or the master copy had been folded.

On the back cover two pictures show Valencia's second goal in a match against the Forces of Darkness and Kily Gonzalez and there is a small scanned image or photocopied reduction of the front cover of the match programme for the Fair Cities Cup match in 1962 at Celtic Park.

Back cover

Having said all that, I don't mind buying pirates. This copy cost £5. To me, it's another item which will be associated with Celtic. Like it or not, as soon as someone publishes such an item, it becomes collectable. No one forces anyone else to buy these programmes and you have your choice to buy one, or not. They will never be added to any official lists without being identified for what they are and so there is nothing to get upset about.

It could be that you have a different opinion about pirate issues. If you do, send it to us at Celtic Programmes Online and it will be included on this page.

UPDATE: This pirate was NOT sold in Spain and was printed in Glasgow.
