UEFA CUP 2003/04
ROUND 4, MATCH 1
CELTIC PARK, GLASGOW
|
The players of both teams wore black armbands and a miniutes silence was observed (not very well by the Barca fans) before this match for the victims of the bomb blasts in Madrid today. Both sides will have two players suspended for the match in the Nou Camp: Douglas and Balde for Celtic, Motta and Saviola for Barcelona. |

UEFA CUP 2003/04
ROUND 4, MATCH 2
CAMP NOU, BARCELONA
|
No official programme for this match TAXI FOR BARCA The day after his team's elimination from the UEFA Cup in this match, captain Luis Enrique faced reporters at the Nou Camp and insisted: "we did enough to win". If he was at the first match in Glasgow, Senor Enrique would know that his team had to score two goals to win. They didn't even get one. The Celtic players were, as we have come to expect, brilliant - and some more. Young Stephen Marshall, making his first European start, was unbeatable in goal, Stan Varga and John Kennedy were immense and supergub Overmars did not get past Didier Agathe once after all his boasting before the match. The midfield was superb with Petrov, Lennon, Pearson and Thompson playing like lions (Lisbon that is). Up front, King Henrik and big Chris Sutton were a handful and kept the Spaniard busy all night. This was as good a performance as most Celtic fans will have seen, certainly since the great days of Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the superb Martin O'God, John Robertson, Steve Walford and the other backroom staff. I would like to thank all of them for one of the best games of my life. Here's what the Barcelona Web site had to say in their defence. "Barca bowed out of the UEFA Cup at the Nou Camp tonight, when an ultra defensive Glasgow Celtic managed to squeeze out a goalless draw that saw them win 1-0 on aggregate. Despite intense pressure from Rijkaard's men. Celtic held out for the draw and although Gerard, Luis Enrique, Ronaldinho, Gabri, Luis García and Sergio García all came close, the Glasgow team showed the kind of perseverance that saw them through to the UEFA Cup final last season. Before the fans had even had time to settle into their seats, Barca created their first chance, when Ronaldinho brilliantly put through Gerard, who was only denied by Celtic's 19-year-old keeper Marshall. Seven minutes later, Gerard had another chance when he met a Ronaldinho cross, but was again unable to beat the visitors' goaly. Gerard was one of Rijkaard's changes and Luis Enrique the other taking Saviola's place upfront - and on 13 minutes, he nearly finished off a series of rebounds in the box, but again Marshall was equal to the task. Celtic were shut into their own half and renounced anything but the occasional counter attack. Barca were dominating and on 21 minutes, Italian referee Messina turned down a clear penalty claim after Ronaldinho was brought down in the box. With Ronaldinho now coming into his own, Barca had another chance on 23 minutes when Oleguer linked up with the Brazilian down the left to try his luck. Celtic had their first chance five minutes later when Chris Sutton shot wide. Then on 33 minutes Puyol was forced off after a collision with a Celtic forward aggravated the injury he picked up against Real Sociedad on Sunday. Rafa Marquez came on for Puyol and Celtic nearly took quick advantage of the swap when Valdes did well to gather in a Larsson cross with Thompson, the goal scorer in Glasgow closing in fast. Celtic were applying a lot of pressure in midfield which meant Xavi was finding it tough to make space and create chances for the team, and it fell to Cocu and Gerard to push the team forward. As the ideas began to run thin, Xavi pushed further forward and tested Marshall with a shot from the edge of the box, then in injury time Luis Garcia laid the ball back for Reiziger, whose shot was deflected out for a corner by a Celtic defender. Frank Rijkaard made his attacking intentions clear in the second half, bringing on Overmars for Reiziger on 52 minutes and then youngster Sergio Garcia replacing Luis Enrique on the hour. Barca were patiently building and moving forward and Luis Garcia sent a swerving shot in from the right on 58 minutes, which went just inches wide. On 67, Ronaldinho weaved his way through the Celtic defence, but Marshal got down well to push the Brazilian's shot out for a corner. All 11 of Martin O'Neil's team were now defending, whilst Barca were beginning to depend more on long distance efforts, like Gabri's on 68 minutes, which Marshall again stopped well. A minute later, the young Scot pulled off the save of the night from a Luis Garcia volley from the penalty spot. Sergio García came close on 73 minutes, when he headed a Gabri cross just wide, then a minute later he saw his shot from the edge of the box again stopped well by Marshall. Now the clock was ticking down though, and Barca began to lose their composure and pump high balls into the box, which the Celtic defenders dealt with easily. Finally, Celtic held out and Barca's dreams of UEFA Cup glory came to an end. " What UEFA said "Celtic FC registered one of the most significant results in their recent history to draw 0-0 in the Camp Nou and eliminate FC Barcelona from the UEFA Cup. Protecting a one-goal lead from Glasgow, Martin O'Neill's team made light work of defending for the full 90 minutes against a Barça side which played below par and created few clear-cut chances. The visitors, despite having two players - David Marshall and John Kennedy - making their full European debuts, got off to an assured start. Inspired by at least 10,000 fans in the Camp Nou, Celtic settled to a decent rhythm of play, albeit in a 4-4-2 system which is not their norm. Ronaldinho was surprised when his dart into the penalty box early in the first half did not bring the penalty he claimed after tumbling over Kennedy's well-timed tackle as Barça failed to make the most of their possession. Apart from very rare moves upfield, Martin O'Neill's side were content to close down the home team, often placing two markers on Ronaldinho, and they never looked out of their depth. It took a splendid Agathe tackle on Ronaldinho, which brought both sets of fans to their feet, in order to prevent the Brazilian scoring in the 67th minute as the pressure mounted. But despite a flurry of chances late on, last season's beaten finalists held on to progress to the last eight, where they will meet Villarreal CF thanks to Alan Thompson's solitary first-leg goal at Celtic Park." |
