MATCH REPORT

Report from the Coventry City Web site below.

"The Sky Blues make it a night to remember as they defeat SPL Champions Celtic 3-1 in Richard Shaw's testimonial.

A first half strike from Dennis Wise and goals from youngsters Kevin Thornton and Liam Davis after the break are enough to ensure that the showpiece occasion ends on a high for Micky Adams' men.

On a night high on emotion here at the Ricoh a bumper crowd of over 25,000 turns out to salute City legend Richard Shaw. After over 10 years and 360 appearances for the Club Shaw has written himself into City folklore and there wasn't a dry eye in the house as the 37-year-old was introduced to a standing ovation.

Ironically on an evening when the Sky Blues' longest current serving player was being honoured it was one of the newest recruits who grabbed the first goal of the game. Dennis Wise taking a free kick on the corner of the box caught the 'keeper unawares, curling a delightful effort around the wall and into the bottom corner with less than three minutes on the clock.

Not to be undone the visitors struck back in equally spectacular fashion in the eighth minute, Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura rattling a long range scorcher past the despairing dive of Marton Fulop. With two great strikes in the opening 10 minutes the relentless pace died down with both teams reduced to speculative efforts as the two defences looked to stem the tide.

However, with 21 on the clock Nakamura sent in a skidding shot goal wards which Fulop could only spill, but the Hungarian international did well to smother the loose ball and keep the scores level. Dele Adebola - who had been kept quiet in the opening stages - then created a fantastic opportunity to hand City the lead.

The powerhouse forward picked up the ball just inside the Celtic half before embarking on a surging run into the visitors' box, only denied by a fantastic challenge from Mark Wilson. Micky Adams rang the changes at half time with only Michael Doyle, Stephen Hughes and the main man Richard Shaw remaining from the starting line-up.

Most notably was the appearance of youngster Stuart Giddings who continues his comeback from injury with a run out against the SPL Champions. For Celtic former City forward Dion Dublin replaces Stanislav Varga in the visitors' rearguard. Gordon Strachan's men created the first opening of the second period, Sean Maloney weaving his way into the box before shooting low at goal, only for Clayton Ince to save well.

With 60 minutes gone Richard Shaw - the man at the centre of the night's proceedings - was replaced by Matt Heath, the City veteran given a rousing ovation as he departed the action. On 66 promising midfielder Kevin Thornton gave the Sky Blues the lead with a great finish after a slide rule pass by Don Hutchison.

The impish middle man ran onto the through ball forcing the Celtic 'keeper to spill and then after producing a great piece of skill found space to place the ball home. On 78 Liam Davis made it 3-1 with a fantastic finish from close range to give the Sky Blues a two goal cushion against the Scottish giants. The goals from the two starlets Davis and Thornton fitting on a night dedicated to a true City legend."
