The Jock Stein Friendship Cup

ALBION ROVERS 1 CELTIC XI 4
Thursday, 17 July 2008
Kick-off: 7.30pm | Attendance: unknown (sell-out) |
Referee: unknown

CLIFTONHILL STADIUM, COATBRIDGE

Celtic won the Jock Stein Friendship Cup for the third year in a row. The Celtic XI was captained by Scott Cuthbert (now on loan to St Mirren) to a 4-1 win against Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill Stadium.

The Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertizer said "Battling Rovers found themselves sharing a pitch with some Hoops stars who earn more in a week than what the Third Division club’s playing budget is for a whole season." This was an obvious reference to Thomas Gravesen and Derek Riordin who both scored in the match but are currently out of favour with Gordon Strachan. Paul Caddis also played before joining the big team to play in Claus Lundekvam's testimonial in Southampton the next day. Celtic scorers were Mark Millar, Danny Lafferty, Thomas Gravesen, Derek Riordan. Pat Walker scored a great goal for Rovers after a mazy run and shot into the far corner of the net. Although the exact attendance figure has not been released, the match was a complete sell-out and Cliftonhill director, Pat Rolink, revealed the gates had to be closed moments after kick-off due to the sheer size of the crowd. Cliftonhill Stadium is listed as having a crowd capacity of 2,496. He was more than happy with his own team's performance saying "Celtic showed us a lot of respect and, hopefully, this is now established as a regular fixture."

The unofficial Albion Rovers Web site said "A sell-out crowd at Cliftonhill tonight saw a Celtic side including Dane Thomas Gravesen and Scotland international Derek Riordan, who bagged the visitors fourth, win 4 -1. Rovers were four down when Pat Walker scored a cracker after a long run."
