FC PORTO 0 CELTIC F.C. 1

Saturday, 26 July 2008
Kick-off: 21.00 | Attendance: 42,308 | Referee: Luciano Manuel TORRES SILVA (PORTUGAL)

ESTÁDIO DO DRÃGAO, OPORTO

There were some rumours circultaing prior to this match that it was to be a testimonial for Vitor Baia, the goalkeeper whose cheating antics infuriated the Celtic fans at the UEFA Cup Final in Seville, 2003. It sounded too crazy to be true and that's the way it turned out. It remains, however, a mystery why Celtic would agree to play such a bunch of cheats under any circumstances that wasn't forced on us by UEFA competition. The Porto club are also under investigation for bribing referees to let them win matches around the same time as the Seville final. If they are found guilty, UEFA should award Celtic that final. The match was never described as a testimonial by Celtic and had this to say on their Web site "With the game billed as ‘FC Porto’s Party’ on the club website (FC Porto) there was a celebratory mood inside the stadium beforehand, but for Celtic it was a pre-season exercise."

"It should be noted that the Porto supporters sportingly applauded Celtic at the end, as they did in Seville. The fans of both clubs, it seems, will never forget that night." - Scotland on Sunday 27/07/08.
