INAUGURAL
WEMBLEY CUP 2009
MATCH 2
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR F.C. 0 CELTIC F.C. 2
Sunday, 26 July 2009
Kick-off:
4pm | Attendance: unknown
| Referee: Alan WILEY (ENGLAND)
WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON
Celtic won the first ever Wembley Cup with this 2-0 victory, ending top of the league with 6 points with Barcelona 4, Spurs 1 and Al-Ahly 0. Darren O'Dea captained Celtic and walked up the Wembley stairs to collect the trophy. Danny Fox made his starting debut. This time he had his name and number 11 on the hOOps. Tony Mowbray made 10 changes from the team that beat Al-Ahly 5-0 two days earlier. Only Glenn Loovens kept his place. Celtic off to a great start when Chris Killen scored the first with a header from a Paul Caddis cross in 9 minutes. Celtic are well on top when Georgios Samaras picks up the ball, just inside his own half. He skinned Dorian Dervite and raced towards the Spurs goal before shooting across Gomes and into the opposite corner of his goal. 2-0 Celtic. The highlight of the second-half was a Paddy McCourt dribble past five Spurs defenders into the box but he clipped his shot just past the post. The Spurs Website described the move in their match report "The game might have been beyond us had Paddy McCourt found the finish to a Ricky Villa-esque dribble two minutes into the second half, the midfielder leaving five players in his wake but placing his effort wide of the target." This was the first non-competative match that Spurs had lost in five years. Their run of friendly victories was achieved after suffering defeat to Celtic on Tuesday 10 August 2004 in a friendly at Celtic Park. |
