For the first time in European Cup history all four semi-finalists were former winners of the trophy - Celtic, Inter Milan, SL Benfica and Ajax of Amsterdam. When Celtic and Inter played this match, the European Cup records of both clubs were almost exactly the same. The only difference was that Celtic had scored more goals than Milan but had lost slightly more.
The match ended in a 0-0 draw, just as the first-leg played in Italy had a fortnight earlier. Extra-time was played but Inter, lead by their brilliant captain held out against a Celtic onslaught and so it went to penalties where Inter scored 5 out of 5 and Celtic only 4 from 5. Dixie Deans was the unlucky Celt as he blasted his high, over the bar and into the old Rangers-end at Celtic Park. The penaly takers are listed below.
Inter went through to play Ajax of Amsterdam in the final. |
