ST OUEN'S FC XI 1 CELTIC FC 11
Monday, 4 December 1972

Kick-off: 19:30 | Attendance: 2,000 | Referee: J. RISEBOROUGH

SPRINGFIELD STADIUM, ST HELIER

St Ouen's is amateur football club playing in the Jersey Football Combination Division One. Founded in 1919, their club colours are yellow and blue. They have won many honours in their long history including -

St Ouen's ground is called the Ouenabau but the match was played at Springfield Stadium in St Helier, the home of the Jersey FA. The Stadium is where Jersey representative sides play their home games and was considered more suitable for hosting the crowd of 2,000 that turned up to see Jock Steins' Celtic team that included Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, George Connelly and King Kenny Dalglish.

The match was arranged as a 'getaway' for the Celtic team from the harsh Scottish weather before playing Hibernian in the 1972 League Cup final on the following Saturday. The 1-11 scoreline is not as bad as it seems for St Ouen's as this Celtic team often thrashed professional teams by 6, 7 or 8 goals and had just given Dumbarton a 6-1 thumping in their previous Scottish League game. However, according to the Celt fanzine, Issue103, the St Ouen's XI was boosted by appearances from some more illustrious footballers "Southampton players Jim Steele, Terry Paine, Hugh Fisher, Mike Channon, Ron Davies and Paul Gilchrist all turned-out for St Ouen's."

As well as the Southampton players listed above, the St Ouen's team was selected from - Breuilly, O'Connor, Nobes, Isham, Spink, Jones, Selkirk, Barton, McLaughlin, Cooper, Craydon, Sands and Rowan.
