Celtic beat clyde 8-2 on aggregate in the first round and joined Bristol City, St Mirren, Burnley, Morton, Oldham Athletic, Partick Thistle and Mansfield Town in the quarter-final draw. Burnley went on to win the cup beating Oldham Athletic 4-1 in a two-legged final. There was a riot at this match. The Burnley fans started it by throwing bottles into the Celtic supporters who were sharing the shed opposite the main stand with them. Too many Celtic fans meant trouble for the Burnley supportes who were outnumbered at their own park. Eventually the Burnley fans invaded the pitch to get away. On the trouble the Burnley Express said "And what a distortion if ALL the blame is placed on the Celtic fans. There was off-field provocationin in plenty, and enough taunting to make certain tempers would explode." This is a reference to the behaviour of the Burnley fans described in the previous paragraph. In the same article the Express state that "the flashpoint (of the riot and pitch invasion) came several minutes from the end of the game and not after the Burnley goal in the 55th minute as the press, radio and television so innaccurately reported." |
