BISHOPSTOWN
| Rudi Vata on trial with Celtic. Cork's new stadium was being built and Celtic changed in Portakabins and left immediately after the game to shower in their hotel. The Bishoptown stadium had been a greenfield site just 3 months before the match but Celtic had been assured the ground would be finished. The crowd, which was also reported as being 6,000, was reduced when the local council refused a safety certificate for use of the new stand. Twenty-four seats were put on a wooden base for VIPs of both teams and the Lord Mayor of Cork to watch the game. the ordinary fans stood on ashmound terracings to see the park. Roy Keane's brother Tom Keane played for Cork (Roy with Nottingham Forest). Referee Tony Gunning played the old rule on pass-backs to the goalkeeper, ignoring the new FIFA edict banning pass-backs which came into force the weekend before this match. Cover of the programme shows Dave Barry and Paul McStay in last season's friendly match. |
