NEWS STORIES 2012-2013

MAY 2013

Hibernian v Celtic, Scottish Cup Final 2013Celtic completed a league and cup double today by beating Hibernian 3-0 in the final at Hampden. Over 51,000 fans saw Neil Lennon's team take an early lead in the eigth minutes when Gary Hooper side-footed an Anthony Stokes cross past Williams in the Hibs goal. The second had the same two players combining to put Hibs out of contention by the half-hour mark, Stokes again supplying the cross and Hooper the finish. Hooper could have completed the first cup final hat-trick since the Dixie Deans version in 1972 when Lustig burst up the right wing and crossed the ball into the Celtic hit man's path. Hooper mis-kicked and missed his chance but the ball broke to Joe ledley and he lashed his shot past Williams for Celtic's third. The Hibees left in their droves and the Celtic fans rejoiced. This was a record 36th time that Celtic have won the cup, let's hope there's many more to come.

DUNDEE UNITED SPL38 - 19/05/2013

The SPL champions rounded of their league season with a 4-0 win at Tannadice today. As he has done so many times this season Kris Commons started the scoring for Celtic with a great free-kick into the bottom left corner of the United net. Next up was Georgios Samaras who scored a quick double to put the champs 3-0 in front at half-time. Celtic's final league goal of the season was scored by substitute Anthony Stokes five minutes from time. It was a fine victory and it gave Neil Lennon a chance to give yet another debut to one of his young rising stars who has been scoring for fun in the development team when Bahrudin Atajic was introduced to the action as a second-half sub for Samaras. The victory means that Celtic finished 16 points ahead of second place Motherwell. Now for the Double. ST JOHNSTONE SPL37 - 11/05/2013

ST JOHNSTONE SPL37 - 11/05/2013St Johnstone players formed a guard of honour to applaud the SPL Champions on at Celtic Park today. Neil Lennon made five changes from the team that started last week's match in Dingwall for the final home game of the 2012/2013 season. Out went Zaluska, Ambrose, Gershon, Commons, Watt and McGeough, in came Forster, Wanyama, Mulgrew, Hooper and Forrest. It seemed to work because this was the best performance in some time and Joe Ledley started it off with an unstopable shot from the edge of the Saints box with only two minutes gone. Charlie Mulgrew made it 2-0 before half-time, scoring directly from a free kick when several players failed to make contact with his cross come shot. When James forrest scored six minutes after the break the match was over but Celtic scored once more with an own goal when Saints centre-half Frazer Wright headed a Mulgrew cross past his own keeper in added time.

Celtic v Inverness CT SPL34 21/04/2013It was the stuff of champions at Celtic Park today. Neil Lennon's hooped heroes scored four times to defeat Inverness and ensure a second SPL title in a row for the Irishman. Add that to a Scottish Cup final against Hibernian for the fans to look forward to and the glorious run to Round of 16 in the Champions League and you have to say that it has been a great season. All four of Celtic's goals came in the second half, three of them in a blistering 12 minute spell that devastated the Caley resistence. Gary Hooper scored the first and third to bring his total to 26 goals so far in all competitions, captain Joe Ledley fired right-footed shot past Reguero in between the Hooper goals to make it 3-0. Georgios Samaras, on as a sub for Anthony Stokes, finished off the scoring with silky run into the Inverness penalty box and an unstoppable shot into the roof of the Caley net.

Dundee United, Scottish Cup Semi-Final 14/04/2013Celtic and Dundee United needed extra-time to decide who went through to the Scottish Cup Final on May 26. Kris Commons scored a stunning goal in just 83 seconds to put Celtic ahead but United's skillfull winger Mackay-Steven equalised in 24 minutes and Jon Daly added a second to give them a 2-1 lead. That lead lasted less than a minute when Victor Wanyama scored from a Izaguirre cross to make the half-time score 2-2. Kris commons and Daly scored in the second-half to make the final score 3-3 and take the match into 30 minutes of extra-time. It could have gone either way after that and it was obvious to the crowd that the next goal would be the winner. Fortunately, that goal was scored by substitute Anthony Stokes when he powered a header past Cierzniak in the United goal.

Celtic were well on top when Nicolas Fedor scored the third. Next up Juventus - "In Lennon We Trust". Match programme, ticket and game stats.

Celtic bombarded the Hibs goal but were unable to score in front of the large crowd, up over 6,000 compaired to the corresponding fixture from last season. So much for armageddon. Match programme, ticket and game stats.

Benfica scored first through Ola John in the seventh minutes but Georgios Samaras equalised for Celtic by heading a Charlie Mulgrew corner just past the half-hour mark, creating a Celtic record for himself by scoring in 5 consecutive European away games. That's Benfica and Celtic equal on points and goal difference with one match to play to see who go through to the last sixteen of the Champions League and who goes on to play in the Europa League. Celtic play Spartak Moscow at Celtic Park in their last match and Benfica have to go to the Camp Nou to play Barcelona in theirs.
